There is no charge to the individual for using the services of a licensed health insurance agent—the commission is entirely paid by the carrier. The carrier is prohibited from selling the policy any cheaper if an individual does not use an agent.

What is required to be eligible for a Medicare Supplement, Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan?

First you must have Medicare both Parts A and B.

Basically, your choices are these:

  1. You must have Medicare both Parts A and B.

  2. You must be in an election period that allows you to enroll or change plans

  3. For Medicare Supplements there is a 7 month period where plans are guaranteed issue.  It starts 3 months before Medicare starts, through your initial month on Medicare and then goes 3 months after

  4. There is a guaranteed issue period for Medicare Supplements if you have just enrolled in Medicare Part B such as leaving a retirement plan.  You need to enroll in a plans before Medicare Part B starts

  5. Eligibility and election periods can be one of the more confusing parts so please contact me for assistance.

At this point I suggest people contact me and together we find what works best at this time.  Here on the website, you will find information that will help you understand what this means as well.  After we agree on which of the choices appears to be the best, then there are details that we consider such as which supplement is best, which prescription plan is best or what Medicare Advantage plans are available in your area and what would be best for you.

When Can You Join, Switch, or Drop a Medicare Drug Plan?

You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare drug plan at these times:

When you first become eligible for Medicare.

The annual Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D Prescription plan open enrollment has changed for 2011.  It is from 10-15-2011 until 12-07-2011.   During this period anyone on Medicare whether over age 65 Medicare or under age 65 disability Medicare can sign up for a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription plan.   This is truly an open enrollment period where you have freedom make changes.  In this period you do not need a reason, you just can change because you want to. During this time, AEP, Medicare beneficiaries may change prescription drug plans, change Medicare Advantage plans, return to original Medicare, or enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time.  Enrollment changes take effect on January 1.

In most cases, you must stay enrolled for that calendar year starting the date your coverage begins. However, in certain situations, you may be able to join, switch, or drop Medicare drug plans during a special enrollment period (like if you move out of the service area, lose other creditable prescription drug coverage, live in an institution, or qualify for “extra help”).

When Can You Join, Switch, or Drop a Medicare Advantage Plan?

You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan at these times:

When you first become eligible for Medicare (3 months before you turn age 65 to 3 months after the month you turn age 65).

If you get Medicare due to a disability, you can join during the 3 months before to 3 months after your 25th month of disability.

Between November 15–December 31 each year. Your coverage will begin on January 1 of the following year.

Between January 1–March 31 of each year. However, you can’t join or switch to a plan with prescription drug coverage during this time unless you already have Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). You also can’t drop a plan with prescription drug coverage or join, switch, or drop a Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan during this period.

In most cases, you must stay enrolled for that calendar year starting the date your coverage begins. However, in certain situations, you may be able to join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan at other times. Some of these situations include the following:

If you move out of your plan’s service area

If you have both Medicare and Medicaid

If you qualify for “extra help”

If you live in an institution
