Health insurance plans are available to everyone during what is known as the “Open Enrollment Period” once every year for a limited period of time. The enrollment period has been shortening every year since the ACA year began. This year Open Enrollment begins November 1 2015 and continues through January 31, 2016. It is confused by the public as Open Enrollment 2016 or 2017, likely because it begins the year before the coverage actually becomes active for.

EXAMPLE: Greg seeks coverage during open enrollment November 13, 2016 for the year 2017 since his coverage won’t begin until the earliest date which is January 1 2017.

Where to shop for individual and family plans are generally two avenues either on the ‘Health Insurance Exchange’ (often called the Health Insurance Marketplace), or Florida Residents can go what is considered ‘off eh exchange’ or private health insurance.

What is the difference between Private health insurance vs public Health insurance marketplace?

The main difference between the health insurance marketplace which is Public Obamacare coverage and private health insurance is that the marketplace offers a federal subsidy to help the potential insured save money and offset the cost for their insurance premiums monthly. The private insurance exchange offers no subsidy but offers many more carriers and plans often with larger and more accepted networks by doctors.

It has been generally confused by the public by in large to believe that Obamacare is insurance coverage that is any insurance bought on the healthcare.gov health insurance marketplace, which is incorrect. Obamacare is a generic term, and another name for the ACA, (the affordable care act) which was signed into law 2010 by president Obama that mandates everyone have health insurance coverage. The law also states many other factors such as no one can be denied coverage due to a preexisting condition or have lifetime maximum caps.

Types of health plans available are all listed as metal plans (and basic health catastrophic plan for those under 30 or qualify);

  • Bronze plan which covers 60% after a usually very high deductible and is the lowest coverage plan offered and often times does not have
  • Silver plan which is by far the most popular purchased plan covers 70% after deductible and is the only plan that can get a “cost sharing
  • Gold plan covers 80% after the deductible
  • Platinum plan is the highest coverage plan at a level of 90% after the deductible.

The network plans available on the marketplace have been primarily HMO type plans and less of PPO which are endangered of leaving he exchange all together. To get PPO plans which are more sought after due to having the wide acceptance of doctors, out of network and no referrals needed. These plans are more available off the marketplace through private health insurance in Florida.

Health Insurance carriers or providers that are available on the marketplace are many however it is broken down by county not the entire state.
